Math
Math 6:
We believe that all students can learn and improve their academic skills. Our classroom is one with high expectations, active participation, and mutual respect. In order to foster lifelong learners, we encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning by completing assignments and projects, being an active learner and thinking critically. There will be an emphasis on developing critical thinking skills, problem solving, and effectively communicating what has been learned.
Units Covered:
Number System (NS): dividing multi-digit numbers; decimal operations; multiplying and dividing fractions; GCF and LCM; integers and absolute value; and graphing on number lines and coordinate planes
Statistics and Probability (SP): writing good statistical questions; creating and analyzing data displays using measures of center, spread, variability and overall shape
Geometry (G): area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons; nets and how they relate to surface area; volume of right rectangular prisms with fractional length sides
Ratios and Proportional Relationships (RP): ratios; equivalent ratio tables; unit rate; converting measurements; and percent of a number
Expressions and Equations (EE): reading, writing, and evaluating numerical expressions; using order of operations and the properties; understanding, writing, and solving equations; and inequalities with dependent and independent variables
Compacted Math 6/7:
This course is part of RBUSD's accelerated math pathway and is intended for those with advanced math skills. It is highly recommended that students selecting this course should have consistently earned 4s on their 5th grade report card in Math and maintain a B- or higher while enrolled in Compacted Math 6/7. Students may not opt into Compacted Math after 6th grade because they would be missing a year's worth of curriculum.
The Number System (NS) includes adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers (positive and negative integers, fractions, and decimals).
Expressions and Equations (EE) will involve applying operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand equations with rational coefficients.
Compacted Math 7/8:
This course is part of RBUSD's accelerated math pathway and is intended for those with advanced math skills. It is highly recommended that students selecting this course should have consistently earned 4s on their 5th grade report card in Math and maintain a B- or higher while enrolled in Compacted Math 6/7.
If your child does not meet these recommendations and you wish him/her to participate in compacted math, please contact our assistant principal, Ashlyn Ramos. Students may not opt into Compacted Math after 6th grade because they would be missing a year's worth of curriculum.
